Captain Harmanpreet Singh (5th, 21st) and forward Abhishek (11th, 24th) scored a brace each.

Amstelveen: India maintained their decade-long dominance over arch-rivals Pakistan with an action-packed 5-3 victory in a crucial FIH World Cup Pool D encounter at the Wagener Stadium on Thursday. The result propelled India into the second round while officially knocking Pakistan out of the competition.
Making their first World Cup appearance in eight years, Pakistan put up a spirited fight after initially going down by three goals. However, India held their composure in front of a sell-out crowd of 10,000 to seal the win.
Captain Harmanpreet Singh (5th, 21st minutes) and forward Abhishek (11th, 24th minutes) scored two goals each, while midfielder Hardik Singh (34th minute) successfully converted a penalty stroke for India. Pakistan's response came through a brace from Hannan Shahid (22nd, 46th minutes) and a penalty corner strike from Sufyan Khan (24th minute).
The win ensured that both India and England advanced to the second round from Pool D. However, India will carry zero points into the next stage due to their opening-round defeat against England.
This high-octane match was the first World Cup clash between the two side-by-side rivals in 16 years, following India's 4-1 victory in New Delhi during the 2010 edition.
First-half dominance
With Pakistan facing a must-win scenario following a loss to England and a draw against Wales, India seized early control. India earned four penalty corners in the opening quarter, with Harmanpreet breaking the deadlock in the fifth minute via a powerful grounded drag-flick.
Abhishek extended the lead in the 11th minute, expertly controlling a long aerial pass from Harmanpreet before his strike deflected off a Pakistani defender's stick into the net. India kept pressing, with debutant Aditya Lalage creating another close chance inside the circle.
Pakistan found their footings in the second quarter, but India struck again in the 21st minute. Executing a penalty corner variation, Harmanpreet passed back to Rajinder Singh; though the initial shot was blocked, Harmanpreet pounced on the rebound to score his second.
Pakistan pulled one back in the 22nd minute when Hannan Shahid converted his second attempt after Indian goalkeeper Suraj Karkera saved the first. Just two minutes later, Abhishek restored India's three-goal cushion, controlling a long pass from Jugraj Singh and driving through the defense to make it 4-1.
Sufyan Khan reduced the deficit to 2-4 shortly after by converting Pakistan's first penalty corner. Despite Sukhjeet Singh receiving a green card just before halftime, India went into the break holding a two-goal lead.
Holding the Lead
India pushed their lead to 5-2 early in the third quarter (34th minute) when Hardik Singh converted a penalty stroke awarded after Lalage was fouled inside the circle.
Pakistan kept up the pressure and narrowed the gap to 3-5 in the 46th minute after Shahid capitalized on an Indian midfield turnover. India had several opportunities to extend their lead further, but Sukhjeet missed a clear one-on-one chance, while Abhishek and Dilpreet Singh were unable to finish their respective openings.
Even after Lalage received a yellow card in the 56th minute—reducing India to 10 players for the closing minutes—the Indian defense held firm against Pakistan's final penalty corner attempt to secure the victory. (PTI)
