Perth: India swept past Australia for a dominant 295-run win in the first Test in Perth on Monday, wrapping up the match with more than a day to spare.
Australia resumed day four on 12-3, needing a massive 534 for victory, but were all out for 238 soon after tea with Jasprit Bumrah taking 3-42.
The second of five Tests begins in Adelaide next week.
India dismissed key players Travis Head (89) and Mitchell Marsh (47) as Australia clung to hope at 227/8 by tea on day four. Despite a defiant effort from the pair, the victory was just moments away for India, who were on the verge of completing a dominant win in the first Test.
Mohammed Siraj has 3-51 and stand-in skipper Jasprit Bumrah 3-42 on a wearing Perth Stadium pitch.
Siraj delivered two incisive morning spells, taking the crucial wickets of seasoned opener Usman Khawaja and struggling batter Steven Smith. By lunch on day four, Australia, chasing an almost impossible target of 534, were in deep trouble at 104 for five. Resuming their innings at 12 for three, Australia quickly slumped to 17 for 4 when Khawaja mistimed a pull shot off Siraj (3/34 in 10 overs), which was brilliantly caught by Rishabh Pant, who sprinted backward to take a fine catch.
Washington Sundar also played a key role, removing Nathan Lyon immediately after the tea break.
However, Travis Head (63 not out from 72 balls) counter-attacked in style, while Smith (17) desperately tried to find his form amidst the pressure. Despite their efforts, Australia could not recover as India completed a comprehensive win.
However Siraj, who had poor series against New Zealand at home, was all over the Australian batters on a pitch that has 'misbehaved' considerably with variable bounce coming into play.
If Khawaja was disposed with a delivery that got big on the southpaw opener, Smith got a delivery that was pitched on perfect length and deviated enough to kiss his outside edge as Pant completed the formalities diving to his right ending a 62-run stand.
Smith and Marnus Labuschagne's dip in form during this World Test Championship cycle is a major cause of concerns for the hosts.
Smith, in fact, did away with his trigger movement towards the off-stump. knowing fully well that he could be a leg before candidate whenever Indian bowlers attack the stumps on a pitch with variable bounce.
Head, who got a beauty from Harshit Rana in the first innings, knew that survival wasn't an option on a deteriorating track and he didn't let the loose balls go unpunished as anything pitched up was driven and the short ones were cut disdainfully.
His fifty came with a perfect ramp over the keeper's head and needed only 63 balls to achieve that feat. PTI
