Sri Lanka’s 1996 World Cup-winning captain, Arjuna Ranatunga, made a rare public appearance recently, reuniting with his former teammates Sanath Jayasuriya, Aravinda de Silva, and Muttiah Muralitharan at the Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club’s 125th anniversary celebrations in Colombo.

A photograph from the event, shared on X by Jayasuriya, quickly went viral, showing Ranatunga dressed in a striking red kurta. The image, however, left many fans surprised, as the legendary skipper appeared noticeably slimmer than in his playing days. Some social media users even voiced concerns about his health, noting the stark contrast to his once robust frame.

Now aged 61, Ranatunga retired from international cricket in July 2000 after playing his final Test against South Africa. Following his illustrious sporting career, he ventured into politics and became a member of the Sinhala Urumaya party, later serving in various governmental roles.

Ranatunga’s leadership remains etched in cricketing history for guiding Sri Lanka to their maiden ICC Cricket World Cup triumph in 1996, defeating Australia in the final. His calm composure, sharp tactics, and defiant batting were instrumental in transforming Sri Lanka into a global cricketing powerhouse.

While his recent appearance sparked mixed reactions, fans and former players alike continue to celebrate Ranatunga’s enduring legacy — that of a captain who redefined Sri Lankan cricket and inspired a generation through resilience, intelligence, and unyielding belief.(With inputs from Agencies)
