The session 'Cartooninte Kaatu Poyo' shed light on the relevance and future of cartoons and how they communicate without words. Cartoonists E P Unni, T K Sujith, and K Unnikrishnan were part of a session called 'Cartooninte Kaatu Poyo' at MBIFL'24, where they discussed the politics and changing trends in cartoons. S Gopalakrishnan moderated the session.
Gopalakrishnan started the session by opposing the idea of cartoons coming to an end. EP Unni, a senior cartoonist, talked about the migratory characteristics of cartoons and how they are the most viewed visual content after cinema. He shared his recent political cartoons based on the Indian Constitution, which he says is itself turning into a cartoon. He emphasised the need to research and analyse cartoons because, just like literature, cartoons have elements to be studied and propagated.
TK Sujith, well known for his political cartoons, compared the outlook of cartoons in Kerala and other states as opposites. He said cartoonists face backlash for addressing political issues in other states, while Kerala awards cartoonists for their works. K Unnikrishnan drew and visualised Kerala's evolution into the modern day and mentioned the pressure of working under print media and how news also impacts cartoons. He expressed his disappointment that in India, sadly, the space for expressing cartoons and voices of protest is limited because of political reasons.
EP Unni said there is negligence towards addressing issues of women and gender in general, and the sensitisation of such problems impacts the production of cartoons. It also discussed the need for research and analysis of cartoons as they have elements to be studied and propagated. The lack of representation of women among cartoonists was also brought up, along with the pressure of working under print media and news-impacting cartoons.
The session was thought-provoking and informative, highlighting the importance of cartoons in today's world. TK Sujith concluded the session by stating that cartoons will not become extinct. He said that they will always be there in other forms amongst the people.
