New York: New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani announced the formation of an all-women transition team on Wednesday, tasking the group with overseeing the city’s transfer of power and developing policy priorities ahead of his January 1, 2026, inauguration.

The transition will be led by executive director Elana Leopold, a political strategist and senior adviser from the Mamdani campaign. The team’s co-chairs include Lina Khan, who previously chaired the U.S. Federal Trade Commission; Maria Torres-Springer, former first deputy mayor of New York City; Grace Bonilla, president and CEO of United Way of New York City; and Melanie Hartzog, previous deputy mayor for health and human services.

Mamdani’s office stated that the transition team aims to ensure readiness to implement policy initiatives on day one of the new administration. Key agenda items outlined by the mayor-elect include the introduction of free citywide childcare, fare-free public transportation, city-operated grocery stores, and the establishment of a Department of Community Safety. This new department will prioritise mental health professionals in emergency response over traditional policing in specific situations.

The team consists of experienced policy professionals and figures from city administration, with a mandate to blend expertise from grassroots organisations and municipal governance. According to Mamdani’s release, this selection intends to reflect the city’s diversity and deliver on promises made during the campaign.

City officials confirmed that the transition process will involve public consultations and staff briefings throughout November and December. The incoming administration will assume office on January 1, 2026, following the conclusion of the current mayor’s term. The mayor-elect’s historic transition team selection marks the first time an all-women group will manage succession planning for New York City’s mayoral office.
