The United States has approved major arms sales to two key Middle Eastern allies, authorising a $4 billion (3.2 billion) deal to supply Patriot missile systems to Qatar and nearly $1 billion worth of precision weapons to Israel.

In a series of notifications sent to Congress on Friday, the US State Department said the agreements were intended to bolster American foreign policy and national security objectives. The announcements come against the backdrop of continuing instability and conflict across the Middle East.

Officials said the proposed sale to Qatar would enhance the country’s air defence capabilities, reinforcing its ability to deter regional threats and contribute to collective security efforts. Meanwhile, the package approved for Israel includes advanced precision-guided munitions, aimed at maintaining its military edge.

The State Department emphasised that both deals would support the security of longstanding allies while promoting stability in a strategically significant region. Congress has the authority to review the proposed sales before they are finalised.
