UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed deep concern over the recent escalation in West Asia. He called on all parties to halt attacks immediately, exercise maximum restraint, and avoid any action that could further inflame an already volatile regional situation.
In a statement issued through his spokesperson, Guterres stressed the need for strict compliance with existing ceasefires in Gaza, Lebanon, and Iran-related tensions. He warned that undermining diplomatic efforts at this stage could further destabilise the region.
The UN chief also raised concerns over the humanitarian situation in Gaza, particularly following the closure of crossings by Israel. He urged the immediate reopening of all entry points to ensure the rapid, safe, and unhindered flow of humanitarian aid at scale.
He reiterated that civilian protection must remain a priority and stressed that international humanitarian law obligations must be fully respected by all sides.
International law and protection of civilians
Guterres further emphasised that navigational rights and freedoms under international law must be upheld. He called for all parties to take feasible precautions to avoid civilian harm and prevent further deterioration of the humanitarian situation.
He reiterated that accountability and respect for international law are essential to prevent further escalation and protect innocent lives.
No military solution, UN pushes diplomacy

He urged all concerned parties to prioritise diplomatic engagement and work towards de-escalation through peaceful means.
Tensions between Israel and Iran have further intensified the regional crisis, following recent exchanges of retaliatory strikes. The situation has raised international concerns about the possibility of a wider conflict spreading across West Asia.
Separately, United States President Donald Trump has claimed that the US is moving towards what he described as “total victory” over Iran, while suggesting progress on a potential nuclear agreement.
Speaking during a political tele-rally, he said diplomatic engagement with Tehran was ongoing and indicated that Iran was willing to negotiate on key nuclear-related demands.

In a parallel development at the UN Security Council, India and Pakistan exchanged sharp remarks over the situation in Afghanistan.
India’s Permanent Representative P. Harish criticised Pakistan’s stance, accusing it of hypocrisy while conducting cross-border strikes. He reiterated support for the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan UNAMA and called for accountability for civilian casualties reported in recent UN findings.
Pakistan, meanwhile, questioned aspects of UN reporting and defended its actions as counter-terrorism operations. India rejected this argument, stating that civilian harm cannot be justified under any security pretext.
Guterres’ message concluded with a strong call for renewed commitment to multilateral diplomacy. He stressed that only coordinated international engagement can prevent further escalation and restore stability across West Asia and neighbouring regions.
