British Columbia: A tragic shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in rural northeast British Columbia has left 10 people dead, including the suspect, CBC News reported on Wednesday.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) confirmed that six people were found dead inside the high school. Another person died on the way to the hospital, and two more were found at a residence believed to be connected to the incident. The shooter was confirmed dead earlier this afternoon from what police described as a "self-inflicted injury."

CBC News reported that two people were airlifted to the hospital with serious or life-threatening injuries, while another 25 are being assessed for non-life-threatening injuries at the local medical centre.

Earlier, Royal Canadian Mounted Police Staff Sgt. Kris Clark confirmed in a text message to the Canadian Press that the victims were involved at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in the Peace region. The situation has been described by police as an “active shooter” incident, but Clark did not provide details on the number of people involved or the extent of their injuries.

Residents of Tumbler Ridge, a town of roughly 2,400 people, have been asked to remain indoors as additional police resources are deployed from surrounding areas.

Larry Neufeld, the legislator for Peace River South, told reporters that an “excess” of resources, including RCMP and ambulance support, have been sent to the community.

“I don’t want to release any more information over concerns that it might jeopardise the safety of the ongoing operation,” Neufeld said. He urged residents to remain in place.

“We do understand that a few folks are out looking for loved ones, and again, please, please go back to your homes and shelter in place and allow the amazing people of the RCMP to make this community, this beautiful community, safe again,” he said.

Tumbler Ridge Secondary School is listed on the provincial government website as having 175 students in Grades 7 through 12.
