Donald Trump said Iran has agreed to tougher nuclear restrictions as US-Iran negotiations continue, with both sides working toward a final deal.

Washington: US President Donald Trump has claimed that Iran has agreed to stricter language on nuclear weapons as negotiations between Washington and Tehran move closer to what he described as a "very good deal."
Speaking in an interview with daughter-in-law Lara Trump that aired on Fox News on Saturday night, Trump highlighted what he called a significant shift in Iran's position on nuclear weapons, suggesting it could become a key element of a potential agreement between the two countries.
Trump said Iranian officials had initially insisted they were not developing a nuclear weapon. However, he argued that the wording had since been expanded to address concerns over acquiring such weapons from elsewhere.
"I said, well what happens if you buy a nuclear weapon? So now it says we will not develop or in any way purchase a military weapon. That's a big difference," Trump said.
The remarks come as the US and Iran continue negotiations over Tehran's nuclear programme, with both sides engaged in another round of discussions over the final terms of a possible agreement.
Trump suggested the revised wording would close potential loopholes and strengthen commitments related to Iran's nuclear activities. The US president said Washington remains focused on securing guarantees regarding Iran's nuclear material and future compliance.
"We're close to a very good deal. If you're going to be in a hurry, you're not going to make a good deal, and slowly but surely, we're getting what we want - and if we don't get what we want, we're going to end it a different way," Trump said.
Describing Iranian negotiators as "good negotiators," Trump nevertheless maintained that the United States currently holds a stronger position in the talks.
According to Trump, the US has "significant leverage" over Iran and believes Tehran's military capabilities have been severely weakened in recent years.
“But we're close to a very good deal. If we can make it, good. Otherwise we just start up with the Department of War as we call it," he added.
The latest comments came a day after Trump met senior cabinet members and military officials in the White House Situation Room to discuss the Iran negotiations. The meeting ended without any public announcement on the next steps.
According to an Axios report citing US officials, Trump has requested several changes to a draft agreement negotiated by American and Iranian representatives.
The report said Trump remains committed to securing a deal but wants stronger provisions on issues he considers critical, particularly the handling of Iran's enriched uranium stockpile.
“It's more specifics about how the US gets the material and the timing,” a senior administration official told Axios.
The report also said Trump wants revisions to language related to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important waterway through which roughly one-fifth of global energy supplies pass during normal operations.
US officials expect another round of exchanges between Washington and Tehran in the coming days, with Iran expected to respond to the latest proposals within about three days.
