Washington (US): Billionaire Elon Musk on Sunday expressed support for the people of Venezuela as SpaceX-owned Starlink announced it would provide free broadband internet services in the country for a limited period, amid rapid political upheaval.

In a post on X, Musk wrote, “In support of the people of Venezuela,” sharing Starlink’s announcement. The company stated, “Starlink is providing free broadband service to the people of Venezuela through February 3, ensuring continued connectivity.”

US releases footage of Maduro in handcuffs

The announcement came as dramatic scenes unfolded following the removal of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro by the United States. US authorities released footage showing Maduro handcuffed during a staged perp walk, in which he was seen wishing reporters and DEA agents a Happy New Year and Good Night as he was led into custody.

In response to the political vacuum, Venezuela’s Supreme Court ordered Vice President Delcy Rodriguez to assume the powers and duties of acting president. The ruling, announced late Saturday local time, concluded that Maduro was in a “material and temporary impossibility to exercise his functions.”

The court cited the Venezuelan constitution, which stipulates that the vice president must replace the president in cases of temporary or absolute absence.

Providing additional context, former US National Security Advisor John Bolton told CNN that a plan to remove Maduro had been presented to then-President Donald Trump during his first term. Bolton said the plan failed to advance because officials were unable to keep Trump “focused” on the issue, despite his interest in Venezuelan oil. The opposition at the time believed economic pressure alone would be sufficient to weaken Maduro’s regime.

CNN reported that the United States later executed what Trump described as a “large-scale strike against Venezuela,” capturing Maduro to face charges and effecting regime change without congressional approval.
