New Orleans: Authorities have identified the suspect in the New Orleans attack as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a US citizen from Texas. The FBI reports that Jabbar had a military background, a career in real estate, and faced personal struggles in recent years.
Shamsud-Din Jabbar served in the U.S. Army from 2007 to 2015 as a human resource and IT specialist, later joining the Army Reserve until 2020. He also spent time deployed in Afghanistan from February 2009 to January 2010 and achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant.

In his personal life, Jabbar had two marriages, the second of which ended in divorce in 2022. Financial difficulties were a factor in his separation, with reports indicating that he struggled to afford basic expenses and faced significant debt, including losses from his real estate business.
A look at Jabbar’s online presence
Jabbar made an impression in a YouTube video posted four years ago, where he promoted his real estate services, boasting of his "fierce negotiating" abilities. He spoke with a southern U.S. accent, positioning himself as a skilled property manager. In the video, Jabbar reflected positively on his military service, emphasizing the importance of attention to detail and responsibility.
Jabbar’s criminal record includes minor charges from earlier years, such as theft in 2002 and driving with an invalid license in 2005. However, it is his more recent actions that have drawn national attention. Prior to the deadly attack in New Orleans, Jabbar reportedly shared videos online that suggested he was "inspired by ISIS," a fact confirmed by President Joe Biden. Authorities also found a black flag associated with ISIS in the vehicle Jabbar used during the attack.
On New Year's Eve, Jabbar allegedly drove a truck into a crowd of New Year’s celebrants in New Orleans at high speed. The incident resulted in the deaths of at least 15 people, with many others wounded. After crashing the vehicle, Jabbar opened fire and was ultimately killed in a shootout with police.
Family’s perspective
Abdur Jabbar, Shamsud-Din’s brother, described him as a "sweetheart," noting that he was intelligent, caring, and kind. While acknowledging that his brother had converted to Islam, Abdur stressed that the attack did not reflect his religious beliefs but rather the influence of radicalization.
Shamsud-Din Jabbar attended Georgia State University from 2015 to 2017, where he earned a bachelor's degree in computer systems. His time at university marked the continuation of his interest in technology and systems management.
The attack in New Orleans has shocked the nation, as the details of Jabbar’s life reveal a man who had faced personal and financial challenges before being allegedly influenced by extremist ideologies. The tragic event serves as a reminder of the complexities that can lead to violence, leaving a city mourning the loss of innocent lives.
