Russia and Ukraine have resumed strikes after a brief truce expired, with reports of a civilian death in renewed attacks.
Kyiv: Fighting between Russia and Ukraine resumed immediately after a brief three-day truce expired, with both sides reporting renewed strikes and fresh casualties.
Ukrainian authorities said Russian forces launched drone attacks on Kyiv soon after the ceasefire ended, forcing air raid alerts across the capital. Residents were urged to remain in shelters as air defence systems responded to incoming threats.

In eastern Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region, officials reported that one person was killed and at least four others were injured in separate strikes. The attacks hit residential areas in the Synelnykove district, according to regional military administration updates.
Ukraine’s military confirmed that drone activity was also detected over Kyiv, marking the first major alert in the capital since the truce began. Authorities said defensive systems were actively engaged to counter the aerial threat.
On the Russian side, the defence ministry stated that 27 Ukrainian drones were intercepted and destroyed overnight across regions including Belgorod, Voronezh and Rostov, shortly after the ceasefire ended.
The truce had been announced ahead of Russia’s World War II Victory Day commemorations, with US President Donald Trump suggesting it could help pave the way for broader peace talks. However, both Moscow and Kyiv had accused each other of violations during the ceasefire period.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said fighting continued even during the truce window, arguing that Russia showed no intent to halt the war that began with its 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
With the ceasefire now over, hostilities have resumed amid stalled diplomatic efforts and continued international focus on multiple global conflicts.
