Albany: New York's voters could be crucial in determining control of the U.S. House in Tuesday’s elections, with tight races across suburban districts. Republicans are fighting to hold onto seats they won two years ago by capitalising on crime concerns, while Democrats are aiming to regain these seats, warning voters that a right-wing Congress could limit abortion rights.
Democrats hope to pick up a few key Republican-held districts in Long Island, the Hudson Valley, and central New York. Meanwhile, the GOP is aiming to hold their ground and even unseat one or two incumbent Democrats.

Long Island: Key battles in suburban districts
One of the most closely watched races is between Republican U.S. Rep. Anthony D’Esposito and Democrat Laura Gillen on Long Island. D’Esposito defeated Gillen in 2022, but the race is expected to be tighter this year, especially with Vice President Kamala Harris at the top of the ticket.
In central New York, Republican Rep. Brandon Williams faces a challenge from Democratic state Sen. John Mannion. Williams won his seat by a narrow margin two years ago, and his district has since been redrawn to make it more favourable for Democrats.
Hudson valley and other suburban races heat up
In the Hudson Valley, three congressional districts are seeing close contests. Republican U.S. Reps. Mike Lawler and Marc Molinaro are trying to hold onto their seats in these competitive areas, where the boundaries have shifted in recent elections. Lawler is up against former U.S. Rep. Mondaire Jones, while Molinaro faces Democrat Josh Riley in a rematch of their 2022 contest.
In the race for New York's 18th District, Democrat Pat Ryan is battling Republican Alison Esposito. Ryan’s win in 2022 was seen as a crucial victory for the Democrats, and keeping his seat in 2024 is seen as essential for the party's hopes of regaining ground in suburban districts.
Republicans play to crime fears, democrats focus on abortion and immigration
Republicans in New York have focused their campaigns on crime, portraying urban areas as unsafe during the pandemic and casting doubt on Democratic leadership. Despite a drop in crime rates, Republicans continue to highlight concerns about safety and immigration, capitalising on suburban unease about these issues.
Democrats, on the other hand, are pushing back on these claims while emphasising the threat to abortion rights. Though abortion did not significantly influence elections in 2022, the issue remains a central point for Democrats in these tight races.
Controversies and changing districts
Controversy has also played a role in some races. Former U.S. Rep. George Santos, who was expelled from Congress after being caught fabricating parts of his biography, was replaced in a special election by Democratic Rep. Tom Suozzi, who is now facing Republican Mike LiPetri. The GOP’s hopes for a comeback in Long Island have been complicated by Santos' scandal.
Jones, one of the first two openly gay Black men to serve in the House, portrayed Lawler as someone who “masquerades as a moderate on television but votes just like an extreme MAGA Republican.” Lawler says Jones is the one masquerading as a centrist, when he is actually liberal. “People want reasonableness,” Lawler said in an interview before the election. “They want folks who are willing to work across the aisle to get things done.”
In the Hudson Valley, Rep. Mike Lawler's campaign gained extra attention in early October when a photo emerged showing him wearing blackface at a college Halloween party in 2006. Lawler has said the costume was meant as an homage to Michael Jackson, but the incident has sparked controversy.
The push for moderate voters
Both Republicans and Democrats have focused their messages on winning over moderate voters, especially in suburban areas where voters once supported President Joe Biden but sent Republicans to Congress two years ago. With control of the House at stake, these races are some of the most watched in the nation.
