Report claims Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei in coma after airstrike as questions grow over war leadership

Tehran: Iran’s newly appointed Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has reportedly suffered serious injuries and is in a coma following an airstrike that killed his father, according to media reports.
A report by British tabloid The Sun claimed the 56-year-old leader lost at least one leg and sustained severe internal injuries, including possible liver or stomach damage.

The report cited sources who said Khamenei is receiving treatment under heavy security at Sina University Hospital in Tehran. However, these claims have not been independently verified due to strict security and internet restrictions inside Iran.
Airstrike that killed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei
The reported injuries are believed to be linked to the February 28 airstrike that killed Iran’s long-time Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei during the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Israel.
Following his father’s death, Mojtaba Khamenei was quickly chosen as the new Supreme Leader.
His appointment was widely viewed as significant because of his close ties with Iran’s powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Questions over who is directing Iran’s war
Reports suggesting Mojtaba Khamenei may be incapacitated have raised questions about who is currently directing Iran’s military strategy in the conflict.
Despite uncertainty about the leader’s health, Iran has continued missile and drone operations in the region, including threats targeting shipping routes such as the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil transit corridors.
Some analysts believe Iran’s political and military system is structured in a way that allows operations to continue even if the supreme leader is unable to directly oversee decisions.
US President Donald Trump said he believes Mojtaba Khamenei is likely still alive but may be seriously injured. “I think he probably is. I think he is damaged, but I think he’s probably alive in some form,” Trump said during an interview.
He also urged ships travelling through the Strait of Hormuz to continue their journey, saying there was “nothing to be afraid of”.
Uncertainty continues over leader’s condition
Iranian state media has broadcast statements attributed to Mojtaba Khamenei, but the leader has not appeared publicly on camera since taking power.
This absence has fuelled speculation about his health and role in directing Iran’s response during the ongoing conflict.
With the war continuing to affect global energy markets and regional stability, uncertainty over the condition of Iran’s new Supreme Leader is likely to intensify geopolitical tensions in the coming days.
