New Delhi: United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio has responded to concerns over racist remarks targeting Indians in the United States by stating that “every country in the world has stupid people”, while insisting that America remains a welcoming nation for immigrants.

Speaking during a joint press conference with Minister of External Affairs S. Jaishankar in New Delhi, Rubio addressed a question regarding the reported rise in racist comments, particularly online, targeting Indians in the United States.

Rubio said he would take the issue seriously but added that offensive remarks are made by individuals everywhere.

“Every country in the world has stupid people,” Rubio said during the interaction, adding that such comments are not representative of the broader American society.

US described as a welcoming country

Rubio defended the United States as a nation built and strengthened by immigrants from around the world.

He praised the contributions made by the Indian community to the American economy and society, saying the US had been enriched by people who migrated there and became part of the country’s social and economic fabric.

He also acknowledged the growing economic role of Indian-origin communities in the United States and expressed hope that their contribution would continue to increase.

Rubio’s remarks come amid growing discussions on social media about racist or anti-Indian comments allegedly made by some Americans online.

The issue has triggered debate among sections of the Indian diaspora and internet users over rising hostility, immigration narratives and online hate speech in parts of the US political discourse.

Rubio says immigration policy changes are not India-specific

The US Secretary of State also addressed questions related to visa policies affecting Indian students and professionals, including H-1B, F1 and J1 visas.

Rubio clarified that the ongoing changes to the US immigration system were part of a broader global overhaul and not targeted specifically at India.

He said the United States was attempting to modernise its immigration system following what he described as a migration crisis in recent years.

Rubio’s comments came during his official visit to India, where he held delegation-level talks with Minister of External Affairs Jaishankar and also met PM Narendra Modi.

The meetings focused on strengthening India-US strategic ties, immigration issues and broader diplomatic cooperation between the two countries.
