The initiative, announced by Marco Rubio during his India visit, is expected to benefit Indian business professionals and commercial travellers

New Delhi: Marco Rubio has unveiled a new “America First” visa scheduling tool as part of a wider effort to modernise operations at American consulates and streamline visa processing.
The announcement came during Rubio’s high-profile four-day diplomatic visit to India, where he spoke about strengthening commercial and strategic ties between the United States and India.
According to Rubio, the new scheduling system is designed to prioritise visa applicants whose travel directly contributes to economic cooperation and strategic partnerships with the United States.
Business travellers to receive priority access
The new tool operates on a core principle that applicants who help strengthen ties with the United States will receive earlier access to visa scheduling appointments.
In practical terms, the priority will largely benefit business professionals travelling for commercial engagements, investment discussions, partnership meetings and expansion projects involving Indian companies operating in American markets.
Rubio said the initiative is intended to remove delays and inefficiencies that can disrupt important exchanges between the two countries.
Officials believe that unpredictable consular processes can affect business visits, investment-related travel and strategic cooperation, all of which are seen as central to the growing US-India partnership.
Rubio highlights expanding US-India relationship
During his remarks, Rubio emphasised the evolving nature of relations between the two countries, saying cooperation had expanded significantly beyond what is often reflected in headlines.
He pointed to increasing commercial engagement between India and the United States, including major investments by Indian companies.
“20 billion in investments from Indian companies in the United States,” Rubio said while discussing the growing economic partnership.
He also referred to the expanding security relationship between the two nations, particularly military cooperation and joint exercises in the Indo-Pacific region.
‘Orderly and secure’ consular system needed
Rubio stressed that a modern and efficient visa system is essential for maintaining and deepening bilateral ties.
“An orderly and a secure consular system is vital to solidifying this important relationship,” he said.
According to US officials, the upgraded scheduling mechanism is expected to improve efficiency, reduce delays and allow consular services to function more effectively.
The US Secretary of State also used the occasion to acknowledge the role played by American diplomatic and consular staff working in India.
He addressed consular officers, support personnel and other staff members stationed at the US mission, describing them as individuals working on “the front lines” of advancing American national interests.
Rubio said the new system was not only aimed at helping visa applicants but also intended to improve internal operations and reduce administrative burdens.
“This facility saved Americans money because it's going to make us more efficient. It's going to allow us to do the work we have to do anyway but more accurately, faster, and in a more efficient way,” he said.
