Paris: One of the five suspects arrested this week in connection with the unprecedented jewel heist at the Louvre was released without charge, according to his lawyers.

Last month, thieves equipped with power tools carried out a daring robbery at the Louvre, the world’s most visited art museum, stealing jewellery valued at an estimated $102 million in just seven minutes during daylight hours.

French authorities initially announced the arrest of two suspects and later apprehended five more, including a primary suspect. However, one of these five was freed without any charges on Friday, his lawyers Sofia Bougrine and Noemie Gorin told AFP.

Bougrine criticised the nature of the arrests, saying in serious crime cases such as this, the large number of arrests could resemble “drift nets,” implying indiscriminate detentions.

Early Saturday, several of the suspects arrested during the week appeared before magistrates at a Paris court, although the public prosecutor's office did not disclose how many were brought to court.

The first two men arrested were charged with theft and criminal conspiracy after partially admitting to the charges, Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau said. These men are believed to be the ones who broke into the gallery while two accomplices waited outside.

The stolen jewellery remains missing as investigations continue.
