Jaishankar also chaired a meeting of the IBSA (India, Brazil, South Africa) Foreign Ministers, where the trio reaffirmed their shared commitment to transformative reforms of the United Nations Security Council

New York: External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar convened a key meeting of BRICS Foreign Ministers on Saturday, emphasising the bloc’s crucial role in reinforcing multilateralism and championing constructive global engagement amidst rising geopolitical tensions.
Addressing his counterparts on the margins of the UN General Assembly, Jaishankar remarked that “when multilateralism is under stress, BRICS has stood firm as a strong voice of reason and constructive change.” He underscored the importance of adhering to the principles of diplomacy, dialogue and international law.
“In a turbulent world, BRICS must reinforce the message of peacebuilding, dialogue, diplomacy and adherence to international law,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter), reiterating the bloc’s commitment to stability and rule-based international order.
Turning to institutional reform, the minister highlighted BRICS’ consistent demand for comprehensive changes to the global governance architecture, particularly the UN Security Council.
“BRICS must amplify its collective call for a comprehensive reform of the principal organs of the United Nations, especially the UN Security Council,” Jaishankar said, stressing the need for a more inclusive and representative multilateral system.
The Indian minister also addressed global economic challenges, warning against rising protectionism and trade barriers. “As rising protectionism, tariff volatility and non-tariff barriers impact trade flows, BRICS must defend the multilateral trading system,” he urged.
Looking ahead, Jaishankar identified technology and innovation as key areas for the future of BRICS cooperation. As Chair of BRICS, India will prioritise “food and energy security, climate change, and sustainable development through digital transformation, startups, innovation, and strengthened development partnerships,” he said.
IBSA Foreign Ministers renew call for UNSC reform
In a separate engagement, Jaishankar chaired a meeting of the IBSA (India, Brazil, South Africa) Foreign Ministers, where the trio reaffirmed their shared commitment to transformative reforms of the United Nations Security Council.
“A great meeting of the IBSA Ministers in New York this evening. IBSA made a strong call for the transformative reform of the UNSC,” Jaishankar posted.
The discussions also touched on enhancing cooperation in areas such as the IBSA Academic Forum, maritime exercises, the IBSA Trust Fund and intra-IBSA trade. “IBSA will continue to meet frequently,” he added.
Strengthening ties with Latin America and the Caribbean
Jaishankar also co-chaired the India–CELAC (Community of Latin American and Caribbean States) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting alongside Colombian Foreign Minister Rosa Yolanda Villavicencio.
“Delighted to co-chair the India-CELAC Foreign Ministers' Meeting along with FM Rosa Yolanda Villavicencio of Colombia in New York this morning,” he shared on X.
The meeting focused on enhancing collaboration in agriculture, trade, healthcare, digital cooperation, disaster response, and capacity building. The ministers also explored emerging domains such as artificial intelligence, critical minerals, space, and renewable energy.
“India & CELAC also concur on the urgent need to reform multilateral institutions to better represent the Voice of the Global South,” Jaishankar stated.
