In a notable shift in tone amid the escalating tensions between Iran, Israel, and the United States, the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas has urged Iran to avoid targeting neighbouring Middle Eastern countries during any retaliatory action. 

The appeal comes even as Hamas reaffirmed Tehran’s right to defend itself against attacks by Israel and the United States, underscoring the delicate balancing act the group is attempting as the regional crisis deepens.

In a statement released amid fears of a wider war, Hamas said that while it stands with Iran against Israeli and American aggression, retaliatory actions should not involve countries in the surrounding region.

The message is significant because Iran has long been one of Hamas’s most influential and consistent supporters. 

Over the past decades, Tehran has provided the Palestinian group with political backing, financial assistance and military support, helping strengthen Hamas’s position in the Palestinian territories.

However, the latest statement suggests that Hamas is increasingly concerned that an expanded Iranian retaliation could pull multiple Middle Eastern nations into the conflict, potentially triggering a broader regional war.

Analysts say the warning reflects growing anxiety among militant groups and regional actors that the current escalation between Israel and Iran, with the United States backing Israel, could spiral into a much larger confrontation involving several countries.

By urging restraint on attacks against neighbouring states, Hamas appears to be signalling that the conflict should remain focused on the confrontation between Iran and its adversaries rather than spilling across borders.

While Hamas continues to strongly support Iran’s stance against Israel and the United States, its latest remarks indicate a desire to prevent a scenario in which the wider Middle East becomes a direct battlefield.
