Israeli media say former Iran president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was targeted at his residence as tensions escalate.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who led Iran from 2005 to 2013, was killed in an Israeli–US airstrike, the Iranian Labour News Agency reported on Monday.
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was reportedly killed at his residence, according to Israeli media, which described the strike as part of a broader campaign aimed at senior Iranian officials.
Several of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s senior advisers and members of his security detail were also reported killed in the Israeli strikes. The former president and his entourage died when a building they were in was hit by the Israeli Air Force in Tehran. His home is situated in the Narmak district in the city’s northeast.
The former president was known for his hardline positions and confrontational approach toward the West, as well as for drawing global attention during disputes over Iran’s nuclear activities.
His time in office was further defined by the contested 2009 election and the nationwide protests that erupted in its aftermath.
Before becoming the president of Iran, Ahmadinejad served as Ardabil Province governor and Tehran mayor.
Earlier on Sunday, Iranian state media reported the death of the supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, after a major attack launched by Israel and the United States. US President Donald Trump said hours earlier that Khamenei had been killed in the joint operation.
