Etihad Rail’s passenger service between Dubai and Abu Dhabi is set to begin on September 30, with some Day 1 services already sold out, including premium seats on the first Dubai to Abu Dhabi train.

Etihad Rail’s much-anticipated passenger service connecting Dubai and Abu Dhabi will begin on Wednesday, September 30, marking the start of regular passenger operations from Dubai.

Demand for the inaugural services has already resulted in some tickets selling out. Premium seats on the first train departing Dubai for Abu Dhabi are fully booked, while the entire 1:14 pm Dubai to Abu Dhabi service has also sold out. On the Abu Dhabi to Dubai route, Premium Class tickets for the 12:43 pm service are no longer available.

Passengers who still want to travel on the first day can book remaining seats, with fares between Dubai and Abu Dhabi starting at Dh39 for Comfort Class. Premium Class fares start at Dh109.

The new service will operate from Al Yalayis Station in Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai to Mohamed Bin Zayed City Station in Abu Dhabi. The journey is scheduled to take about 64 minutes, while other current Etihad Rail information lists the journey at around 57 minutes depending on the timetable and service.

Five services are scheduled in each direction on the Dubai Abu Dhabi route on launch day. Dubai departures are scheduled for 6:14 am, 7:14 am, 1:14 pm, 5:14 pm and 6:14 pm. Abu Dhabi departures are scheduled for 6:43 am, 7:43 am, 12:43 pm, 4:43 pm and 5:43 pm.

The launch will also expand passenger rail services to Al Dhaid in Sharjah. A Dubai to Fujairah service will operate at 1:57 pm, with fares starting at Dh29 and a journey time of around 70 minutes.

Al Yalayis Station is located close to the Dubai Metro Red Line, with a dedicated pedestrian connection planned to link the station with Jumeirah Golf Estates Metro Station. This is intended to allow passengers to combine Etihad Rail with Dubai’s urban public transport network.

The opening has also attracted attention because UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan travelled as the first passenger on an inaugural Abu Dhabi to Dubai journey. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum later described the President’s surprise appearance at the Dubai station opening as a particularly memorable moment.

What the launch means for passengers

The Dubai launch extends the UAE’s national passenger rail network into another major population and employment centre. The network is being rolled out in stages, with further stations scheduled to open across the UAE through 2027.

For passengers travelling between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the new service provides another inter-emirate transport option. The location of Al Yalayis Station also gives residents in southern Dubai access to the national railway, with road connections to areas including Al Furjan, Dubai Investment Park, Dubai South and Jumeirah Golf Estates.

The early sell-out of selected services suggests that demand is already concentrated around particular departure times and Premium Class seats. However, other Day 1 tickets remain available, meaning passengers can still book some services depending on availability.

The September 30 launch is a major step in the phased expansion of Etihad Rail’s passenger network. Dubai and Al Dhaid are joining a network that began passenger operations between Abu Dhabi and Fujairah in June 2026.

The Dubai service is also distinct from the UAE’s planned high-speed rail project. The existing passenger service is designed for regular inter-emirate travel, while the separate high-speed project is planned to eventually connect Dubai and Abu Dhabi in around 30 minutes.

For travellers, the immediate attraction is the combination of a fixed rail timetable, relatively short journey time and fares beginning at Dh39 for Dubai to Abu Dhabi. The planned connection with Dubai Metro could also make the service more useful for passengers who do not want to drive to the station.
