Himashri Boro, a 20-year-old college student and dancer from Assam, was found dead beside railway tracks in Andhra Pradesh after going missing during a train journey home. She had reportedly told family members that she felt unsafe in an overcrowded coach.

Her death is under investigation, and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has called for a thorough probe.

Who was Himashri Boro?

Himashri Boro, also reported as Himashree Boro, was a 20-year-old student at B Borooah College in Guwahati, Assam. She was from the Kamrup district area and participated in cultural performances as part of a dance troupe.

She had travelled to Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, with the troupe for dance programmes. She was returning to Assam ahead of an examination when she went missing during her train journey.

What happened to Himashri Boro?

She reportedly felt unsafe on the train

Himashri boarded the Dibrugarh-bound Vivek Express at Visakhapatnam railway station in the early hours of October 6, 2026. According to her family, she contacted them and friends during the journey and expressed discomfort about the overcrowded coach and the men around her.

She also reportedly shared a video of the compartment with a friend. Her family later lost contact with her, and her phone became unreachable. They contacted railway authorities and sought help in tracing her.

Her body was found beside railway tracks

Himashri’s body was subsequently recovered near the railway tracks between Dusi and Ponduru in Andhra Pradesh’s Srikakulam district. Her belongings, including bags, were reportedly found inside the train.

The circumstances leading to her disappearance and death remain under investigation. Her family has expressed suspicion of foul play and sought a thorough investigation. However, suspicion raised by the family is not proof of a crime.

What have investigators found so far?

Andhra Pradesh Police have examined the scene and gathered evidence, including CCTV footage, passenger details and communications made before she went missing.

On October 11, police said the post-mortem findings ruled out physical and sexual violence. A senior police officer said preliminary findings suggested that Himashri may have been standing near the train door. Investigators have been examining the possibility that she fell from the moving train, but the circumstances surrounding her death have remained the subject of the inquiry.

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma seeks thorough probe

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited Himashri’s family and assured them that the state government would pursue the case. He also wrote to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, seeking a thorough investigation.

The Assam government deputed an Inspector General-rank police officer to assist with the inquiry. Andhra Pradesh Police also travelled to Assam to record statements from her family members. Her father has filed a complaint seeking an investigation into the possibility of homicide or other deliberate criminal acts, along with alternative explanations for her death.

Why the case has raised railway safety concerns

Himashri’s death has drawn attention to passenger safety, particularly the response to distress reports from women travelling alone. Her family said she had communicated her fear during the journey and contacted railway authorities after losing contact with her.

The case also raises questions about how complaints of harassment or unsafe conditions are handled on trains and whether passengers receive timely follow-up when someone goes missing. Railway authorities have said an inquiry was initiated after a complaint about alleged misbehaviour aboard the train.

The central question remains what happened between Himashri’s last communications and the discovery of her body. Establishing the sequence of events will depend on the investigation and forensic evidence.
