Seoul, South Korea: An 81-year-old South Korean fashion model made headlines at the Miss Universe Korea pageant, competing against contestants young enough to be her grandchildren. Choi Soon-hwa, wearing a stunning beaded white gown, showcased her talents in a singing contest during the event held on Monday in Seoul.

While she didn’t win the crown, Choi was awarded "best dresser," highlighting her impressive style. The title went to 22-year-old Han Ariel, a fashion school student, who will represent Korea at the 73rd Miss Universe pageant in Mexico City this November.

Choi, who started her modelling career in her 70s after working as a hospital caregiver, was one of 32 finalists announced earlier this month. “Even at this age, I had the courage to grab onto an opportunity and take on a challenge," Choi told The Associated Press hours before Monday's pageant.

“I want people to look at me and realise that you can live healthier and find joy in life when you find things you want to do and challenge yourself to achieve that dream.”

A year ago, she wouldn’t have been able to compete as Miss Universe had limited entries to women aged 18 to 28. However, this year the age limit was lifted to promote diversity and modernity in the competition.

The Korean pageant also removed the swimsuit segment and relaxed eligibility criteria concerning education, height, and foreign language skills, allowing more women to participate.
