Beijing: Chinese President Xi Jinping will visit the United States from Wednesday to Friday (September 23-25) for talks with US President Donald Trump, Beijing confirmed on Monday.

A Chinese government statement confirmed the visit but provided no further details. Washington had earlier announced that the two leaders were expected to meet this week.

Trump will personally welcome Xi at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday, a US official said.

The two leaders are expected to hold their main talks on Thursday. Trump had said on Sunday that he planned to discuss “almost everything” with Xi.

The visit comes amid tensions between the world's two largest economies over trade, technology and broader strategic issues.

Trade tensions remain key issue

The simmering trade dispute is expected to be a major focus of the talks. Although the two countries have maintained a tariff truce for nearly a year, they have yet to reach a lasting agreement.

China's top trade negotiator, Vice Premier He Lifeng, is currently in the US for talks with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

The two officials also discussed creating a communication channel on concerns related to artificial intelligence during their meeting on Sunday.

Taiwan and Iran also on agenda

 

The leaders are also expected to discuss wider strategic issues, including tensions over Taiwan, where the risk of a military confrontation remains a concern.

Trump's war with Iran is another issue casting a shadow over US-China ties. Beijing is seeking to avoid US sanctions linked to countries dealing with Tehran.

The development comes amid reports that China supplied Iran with intelligence for a strike on US troops, adding another layer of tension to the relationship.
