A Hindu prayer for peace and unity was delivered at the White House during the National Day of Prayer event, drawing widespread attention online and marking a prominent moment of religious diversity ahead of the United States’ 250th year of independence celebrations in 2026.

The prayer was led by a volunteer from the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS), who opened the invocation by asking attendees to “close your eyes and fold your hands” before chanting the prayers focused on universal peace and harmony.

“May there be peace in the sky and in space,” the speaker said during the White House prayer.

“May there be peace across earth, in water, and for all beings. May there be peace throughout nature and in the environment. May the peace of heaven spread throughout the universe.”

The prayer also called for personal well-being and spiritual harmony.

“May we all have peace physically, mentally, and spiritually,” the volunteer added.

The invocation concluded with the chant, “Om Shanti Shanti Shanti Sushanti Bhavatu...,” which was later translated into English for attendees at the event.

The volunteer also thanked the White House on behalf of the organisation, the BAPS fellowship in Robbinsville, New Jersey, and spiritual leader Guru Hari Mohan Swami Maharaj.

The Hindu prayer at the White House quickly gained traction on social media as the National Day of Prayer event is traditionally associated with America’s broader faith and religious traditions. Many online users described the moment as a reflection of growing religious representation and diversity in public events in the United States.

In a statement posted on social media, BAPS Public Affairs said it was “honored to participate” in the White House National Day of Prayer ceremony.

The organisation added that moments like these show how “faith, service, and shared values continue to strengthen our communities.”

The event comes as the United States prepares to commemorate 250 years of American independence in 2026, a milestone expected to feature major national celebrations across the country.

Earlier, Donald Trump, in his National Day of Prayer message, said America’s tradition of faith remains deeply connected to the country’s history and identity.

“This National Day of Prayer, we honor America’s enduring tradition of prayer, faith, and trust in Almighty God,” Trump said.

He also referred to the role of prayer during America’s independence movement and described faith as a central part of the country’s historical foundation.
