Koderma: On a stormy night in Jharkhand’s Koderma district, a passenger bus transformed into an unlikely delivery room, becoming the stage for a heartwarming tale of courage, compassion, and sheer human grit.

It was close to midnight when Radha Devi, a 20-year-old woman from Vaishali in Bihar, went into premature labour aboard the ‘Shri Sai’ sleeper coach bus bound for Ranchi. Accompanied by her husband Suraj Ram, mother Meena Devi, and sister, Radha had not expected her baby before her due date on August 2. But nature had other plans.

As the skies unleashed a torrential downpour and the highway grew increasingly treacherous, panic gripped the bus. With no hospital in sight and worsening weather making travel impossible, the situation turned dire.

That’s when humanity rose to the occasion. Spotting a police control room (PCR) van near a railway overbridge, the bus driver rushed to seek help. Policeman Om Prakash and his team sprang into action. Defying the lashing rain, Om Prakash began a desperate search for medical assistance, visiting multiple hospitals before finally convincing Dr Praveen Kumar of Aryan Hospital to come to the scene.

Without hesitation, Dr Kumar and his team raced to the bus. On assessing the situation, he made a swift, life-saving decision: Radha could not be moved — the delivery would have to happen right there.

Passengers voluntarily stepped off into the pouring rain, forming a protective circle around the bus as it turned into a makeshift maternity ward.

At exactly 2.40 am, the tense night gave way to joy as the cries of a newborn girl filled the air. Cheers and applause erupted among drenched but beaming passengers. The rain, relentless until then, now seemed to join in the celebration.

Both mother and baby were later taken to Aryan Hospital for postnatal care and discharged the following day in good health.

What began as a terrifying ordeal became a midnight miracle — a story of strangers united by empathy, a doctor’s unwavering commitment, and the triumph of life against the odds.
