
Sustainable aviation and use of sustainable fuel is the norm of the hour in the aviation industry with every stakeholder striving to achieve their sustainability targets for a cleaner and greener aviation. Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, too, advocated strongly for sustainable practices in the aviation industry.
Speaking at a FICCI event in New Delhi, the minister strongly promoted aviation practices that will help in reducing overall carbon emissions. He also mentioned various airports in India that have already adopted sustainable practises and are carbon neutral.

"Efforts are on to ensure that 1% of SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) is blended with jet fuel for international commercial flights by 2027 and then increase the SAF quantum to 2% by 2028." he said.
The minister highlighted government’s efforts to encourage the use of SAF while trying to achieve ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) objectives. This is in sync with the second phase of the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA).
CORSIA was established by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), as the first global measure to reduce emissions from international flights. In 2016, the ICAO agreed to establish CORSIA framework, to set a carbon-neutral growth target from 2019.
India had earlier considered mandating blended SAF use by airlines from 2025, beginning with 1% green fuel and increasing to 5% by 2030. However, due to certain challenges in production, storage, and transportation of SAF the implementation of this norm was not possible.
Hence India opted out of the initial phase and will be joining the second phase starting in 2027.
A few weeks back another union minister -- Nitin Gadkari also encouraged the aviation stakeholders to come together and increase the usage of SAF blend along with jet fuel as more sustainable fuel for flying.
