India’s domestic passenger traffic crossed a record of 1.29 crore passenger mark in July 2024, a leap of 7.3 percent rise from July 2023 data, as per the latest figures released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). However, if we look at the passenger numbers over a month-on-month basis it is observed that passenger count in July 2024 was slightly less as compared to June 2024. In June 2024, Indian domestic airlines carried 1.32 crore passengers.
IndiGo continues to rule the roost in terms of market share dominance with the share rising to 62 percent in July 2024. As against IndiGo, Air India’s market share declined to 14.3 percent along with AIX Connect and SpiceJet with their market shares falling to 4.5 percent and 3.1 percent, respectively. Vistara’s share gained by 10 percent while Akasa Air and Alliance Air saw reductions in their market shares, dropping to 4.7 percent and 0.9 percent, respectively.
All-in-all apart from IndiGo and Vistara, the rest of domestic carriers experienced a decline in their market share this July.
Interestingly if we look at the passenger data for the first seven months – January 2024 to July 2024, domestic airlines carried about 923.35 lakh passengers marking an increase from the 881.94 lakh passengers recorded at the same time last year. This clearly marks a growth of 4.70 percent Year-On-Year with a 7.33 percent in July 2024.
