India remains the world’s second-largest consumer of gold after China, with most of its demand met through imports. Domestic gold rates are influenced not only by international prices but also by the rupee-dollar exchange rate, import duties, and local taxes.
Meanwhile, the surge in prices has reshaped jewellery buying trends. In Bengaluru, jewellers report growing interest in demi-fine jewellery — a mix of sterling silver, gold plating, and semi-precious stones — as consumers look for affordable yet stylish alternatives to solid gold ornaments.
Market experts believe that while gold may face short-term volatility following the Fed announcement, its long-term fundamentals remain strong. “Despite recent pullbacks, gold continues to serve as a hedge against inflation and a stable investment during market turbulence,” said Ross Maxwell, Global Strategy Lead at VT Markets.

India’s domestic gold market continues to be guided by global trends, import duties (currently 10%), and rupee movements. A weaker rupee typically makes gold imports costlier, pushing domestic prices higher.
Experts forecast further price swings in the coming days as markets digest the Fed’s policy outcome. However, with inflationary pressures persisting and geopolitical uncertainties continuing, gold remains a preferred safe-haven asset for Indian investors.
