Thiruvananthapuram: Senior advocate Bailin Das, accused of brutally assaulting a junior woman lawyer, has been denied anticipatory bail and remanded to judicial custody for 14 days by the Thiruvananthapuram magistrate court on Friday.
Das, who had been on the run since the incident, was arrested on Thursday from Station Kadavu in Thiruvananthapuram by the Thumba Police. He had evaded arrest for several days, prompting searches at his residence in Poonthura and the homes of several acquaintances.
The arrest follows a disturbing complaint by 26-year-old junior lawyer J V Shamili, who alleged that she was assaulted with a mop stick by Das at his office in the Maharani building in Vanchiyoor. The assault reportedly left Shamili with visible injuries, and the case was registered under non-bailable sections.
In a suspected attempt to preempt legal action or file a counter-case, Bailin Das had reportedly sought treatment at a coastal speciality hospital in Valiyathura shortly after the incident. Hospital records confirmed that Das had sustained facial injuries, which police believe may have been self-inflicted or exaggerated to build a defence.
Following the allegations, the Bar Association has temporarily suspended Das. His arrest has triggered outrage within legal circles, with calls for stricter accountability and better safeguards for junior members of the profession.
