Center approves ₹4,645.60 crore for flood, drought, landslide, and fire mitigation projects across 9 states. Assam, Kerala, UP, Bihar, and more to benefit.

New Delhi: The Central government has approved a series of mitigation, recovery and reconstruction projects worth ₹4,645.60 crore to support nine states across the country.
The projects will benefit Assam, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh.
A High-Level Committee (HLC) chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah cleared the proposals. The panel, which also includes the Finance Minister, the Agriculture Minister and the Vice-Chairman of NITI Aayog, considered requests for assistance from the National Disaster Mitigation Fund (NDMF).
Among the key approvals is a wetland restoration and rejuvenation plan for Assam, with an outlay of ₹692.05 crore. Of this, the Centre will bear ₹519.04 crore (75 per cent), while the state will contribute ₹173.01 crore (25 per cent). Wayanad is allocated with ₹260.56 crore, as per reports.
According to the Home Ministry, the initiative will strengthen wetland capacity, provide flood storage, boost resilience, protect aquatic ecosystems and promote economic growth through improved fisheries. Covering 24 wetlands across nine districts in the Brahmaputra river system, the project is expected to mitigate flood and erosion risks and serve as a pilot for making the Brahmaputra Valley flood-proof.
The HLC also cleared the second phase of the Urban Flood Risk Management Programme (UFRMP) for eleven cities, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Guwahati, Jaipur, Kanpur, Patna, Raipur, Thiruvananthapuram, Visakhapatnam, Indore and Lucknow, with a total outlay of ₹2,444.42 crore. Funding will follow NDMF guidelines, with the Centre covering 90 per cent and the states 10 per cent.
For Guwahati alone, a dedicated flood mitigation plan worth ₹200 crore has been approved, of which ₹180 crore will be provided by the Centre. Measures include interlinking water bodies, stormwater management, flood protection walls, erosion control through nature-based solutions, and early warning systems.
Previously, the government sanctioned UFRMP projects worth ₹3,075.65 crore for seven metro cities, Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Pune.
In addition, funding has been approved for other hazard mitigation projects, including ₹1,000 crore for landslides, ₹150 crore for glacial lake outburst floods (GLOF), ₹818.92 crore for forest fires,₹186.78 crore for lightning, and ₹2,022.16 crore for drought.
