Thiruvananthapuram: Preliminary autopsy reports indicate that two members of a family, who died after eating at a Vizhinjam hotel, may have succumbed to food poisoning. Final confirmation awaits pathology laboratory results.
The deceased were identified as Shaji, 42, and his mother-in-law, Rashida Beevi, 58, natives of Nilamel in Chadayamangalam, Kollam district. Shaji’s wife, Sajimol, 39, is undergoing treatment at Parippally Government Medical College Hospital.
Rashida Beevi’s post-mortem was conducted at Parippally Medical College. While doctors have attributed the deaths to food poisoning, Shaji’s body is currently kept at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College.
The family had eaten at Asmak Hotel near the Muhyiddheen Mosque in Vizhinjam. According to relatives, they consumed fish eggs, prawns, squid thoran, appam, and porotta. Soon after leaving the hotel, they developed severe vomiting and other symptoms.
Shaji’s two children and another person who accompanied them have not reported any symptoms.
Following the incident, the Health Department ordered the closure of the hotel. The Food Safety Department has launched a detailed inspection and is collecting samples for analysis. Authorities are also monitoring others who consumed fish from the hotel on the same day.
