Thiruvananthapuram: Things have taken a turn for the worse in the BJP following its loss in the Palakkad by-election, as the infighting within the party has intensified, with leaders publicly trading accusations against each other. The unprecedented crisis has raised concerns within the party leadership, seemingly worsening the situation. Leaders have been throwing tantrums on social media and making outbursts through traditional media, putting the party in a poor light before the public.
It is reported that the telephone call details of around 40 individuals, including some leaders, have been shared with the central leadership. This is being done to resist any potential disciplinary action against the state leadership in connection with the by-election fiasco. It is also said that the call details of BJP leaders include calls made to Congress leaders. As the situation appears to be spiraling out of control, K Surendran has expressed his willingness to step down from his post as state president.
Currently, all internal battles within the party are focused on one goal—removing K Surendran from the position of state president. The dissident faction is determined to achieve this, while the official faction has countered with all available tactics to prevent the coup. Surendran has offered to step down to quell the infighting. But it seems the internal strife will not end easily, as the dissidents do not want the official faction to maintain key positions.
Rumors suggest that if Surendran steps down, former state president V Muraleedharan may be considered for the post. However, the dissidents are opposed to this possibility. Although Muraleedharan has publicly stated that he will not return to the role of state president, the rebel faction remains intent on ending the dominance of the K Surendran-V Muraleedharan duo in the party. There are also signs that the relationship between Surendran and Muraleedharan is becoming strained due to the latest developments.
With the battle now being fought on social media and even in the streets, BJP leadership is expected to step in to regain control of the situation. The pro-Surendran faction claims they have the backing of the central leadership. Meanwhile, the RSS leadership has yet to respond to the ongoing crisis within the BJP. Interestingly, senior leaders PK Krishnadas, MT Ramesh, and AN Radhakrishnan have also remained silent on the disappointing developments within the party. It is expected that the state leaders' meeting scheduled for Tuesday will be decisive.
