Thiruvananthapuram: Palayam is all set to emerge as Thiruvananthapuram’s second dedicated nightlife destination after the popular Manaveeyam Veedhi under the city’s Smart City project. The beautification and development of the area aim to transform a key stretch into a vibrant public space for art, leisure, and community engagement.
The project focuses on a 200-meter stretch between the main entrance of University College and the Kerala University Library. It is being developed in collaboration with the Kerala Road Fund Board (KRFB) and K-Rail, inspired by the successful model of Manaveeyam Veedhi but with additional features to enhance the visitor experience.
As part of the makeover, the area will include specially designed seating areas, smart gardens, ornamental plants, public Wi-Fi, modern street lighting and floor lights, stage for cultural performances, a snack bar, kiosk. A video wall and a loudspeaker system for announcements, two disability-friendly walkways, carvings depicting the history of the iconic VJT Hall.
The project aims to make Palayam a new hotspot for people to relax and spend time, especially during the evening hours. The inclusion of cultural and technological elements is expected to attract more visitors and promote the idea of a safe and lively nightlife in the city center.
With a total construction cost of ₹1.80 crore, the project began in November last year and is now in its final stages. Authorities have confirmed that the remaining work will be completed and the space will be opened to the public by the end of May.
Although the Playam nightlife project is based on the Manaveeyam Veedhi model, Smart City officials hope that the Palayam nightlife project will not only match but surpass the features Manaveeyam Veedhi.
