Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government led by Chief Minister VD Satheesan has appointed senior advocate T Asaf Ali as the state’s Director General of Prosecution (DGP), marking his return to a key position in the state’s legal administration.

Alongside him, senior advocate Jaju Babu has been named the new Advocate General (AG) of Kerala as part of a broader reshuffle in top legal posts.

Background of T Asaf Ali and previous tenure

T Asaf Ali is a senior advocate from Kerala with long-standing involvement in both legal practice and Congress-linked legal organisations. He previously served as Director General of Prosecution from 2011 to 2016, during which he oversaw the state’s prosecution system and coordinated legal strategy in several high-profile and politically sensitive criminal cases. His role involved supervising public prosecutors and guiding the government’s legal position in criminal matters before courts.

Role of Director General of Prosecution

The Director General of Prosecution is a senior administrative legal post responsible for managing the state’s prosecution machinery. The office ensures coordination between government prosecutors, provides legal direction in criminal cases, and supports the state’s litigation strategy in courts. It is a legal and administrative position and is distinct from policing or investigative agencies.

Political and legal profile

Apart from his legal career, Asaf Ali has also been associated with the Indian National Congress through its legal wings in Kerala, including the Indian Lawyers Congress. His dual presence in legal and political circles has often placed him in discussions surrounding politically sensitive cases handled during previous UDF government tenures.

Appointment of Advocate General and broader reshuffle

Along with Asaf Ali’s appointment, senior advocate Jaju Babu has been appointed as the new Advocate General of Kerala. The Advocate General serves as the chief legal advisor to the state government and represents it in major constitutional and administrative matters before higher courts. Jaju Babu succeeds the previous office holder as part of the new government’s legal restructuring.

The appointments are seen as part of the new administration’s effort to bring experienced legal professionals into key roles within the state’s justice and prosecution system. With both officials having prior experience in government legal work, the leadership change is expected to influence the handling of ongoing and future legal matters involving the state.
