Chennai: To manage the huge increase in passenger traffic during the summer season, Southern Railway has announced the operation of special superfast trains connecting Chennai Egmore and Kanyakumari. These "trains on demand" will provide essential relief for travellers heading to the southern tip of the peninsula during the peak holiday weeks of May and June.

Service schedule and key timings

The special service, operating under train numbers 06045 and 06046, will run for four cycles. Train No. 06045, the Chennai Egmore – Kanyakumari Superfast Special, is scheduled to depart from Chennai at 11.50 pm every Friday (May 15, 22, 29 and June 5). It will reach Kanyakumari at 1.00 pm the following Saturday.

The return journey, Train No. 06046, will depart from Kanyakumari at 11:25 pm on Sundays (May 17, 24, 31 and June 7), arriving back at Chennai Egmore at 11:30 am on Monday mornings.

Route details and major stoppages

Designed to cater to major towns along the route, the superfast special will feature several important halts. Beyond the primary terminus at Kanyakumari, the train will stop at Nagercoil, Valliyur, Tirunelveli and Madurai. Other notable stations, include Tiruchchirappalli, Villupuram and Tambaram.

Coach composition and facilities

To accommodate various passenger needs, the train will feature a comprehensive coach layout. The composition includes two AC, Two Tier coaches, two AC Three Tier coaches, and 10 Sleeper Class coaches. Furthermore, there will be three General Second Class coaches and two Second Class coaches specifically designed to be accessible for passengers with disabilities (Divyangjan Friendly).
