Kottayam: Kerala government-run Civil Supplies Corporation (Supplyco) has increased the price of rice under its subsidised scheme by Rs 2 per kilogram.

Consumers who earlier paid Rs 25 per kg for 20 kilograms of rice will now have to pay Rs 27 per kg. The revised rate has come into effect following changes in the price of rice procured from the Food Corporation of India (FCI) under the Union government.

FCI procurement cost revised

Officials said the rice that was earlier purchased at Rs 22.50 per kg was bought at Rs 23.25 per kg for this month. The increase amounts to 75 paise per kg.

FCI stated that procurement expenses had gone up. Officials maintained that the price revision comes after a gap of several years despite rising costs.

State procuring rice every month

The state is currently procuring rice from FCI on a monthly basis.

Officials said the change was introduced considering the flexibility to purchase varieties such as Andhra rice depending on monthly arrivals and availability in the state.
