Thodupuzha: The students of the Co-operative School of Law who staged a protest atop their college, threatening to die by suicide, temporarily called off the agitation in the wee hours of Wednesday. The protest started on Tuesday afternoon and was called off after holding discussions with the sub-collector.

The demonstration stemmed from dissatisfaction with the college's allocation of marks to a particular student and the subsequent threat of suspension when a section of students raised concerns.

In the discussions held with the sub-collector, it was decided to dismiss the existing college governing council and also to appoint an officer at the cooperative department as the administrator. Apart from this, an investigation will be taken up at the university level to initiate actions against the real culprits. The students warned of resuming the protests if any of the settlement clauses were violated.

Looking back at the events, the students in the college had accused the principal of favouritism and had appealed for the person's resignation. They alleged that those who protested were suspended after framing them in a fake ragging case. Due to this, the affected students threatened to die by suicide and climbed on top of the college building.

The students had initially refused to come down until a government minister or university representative intervened to address their grievances. Following this, the Magistrate had visited the spot yesterday. The fire brigade even positioned a safety net in anticipation of any potential leaps.

The students revoked the threat only after they received word of confirmation from the management that their suspension had been withdrawn. However, the protest continued till 4 AM today.
