Chengannur: The arrest of Kandararu Rajeevaru, the chief priest (Tantri) of the world-renowned Sabarimala temple, has cast a shadow over the Thazhamon Madom. The family, which has served as the spiritual custodians of Lord Ayyappa’s forest abode for generations, finds its ancient prestige entangled in a modern-day criminal investigation involving the loss of gold.

The Thazhamon family occupies a singular space in Kerala’s religious landscape. Based in Chengannur, Alappuzha, their lineage is steeped in the legend of Lord Parasurama, who is believed to have bestowed the title "Kandararu" upon them. As one of the state's earliest tantric families, they oversee rituals not only at Sabarimala but also at the historic Shiva temples of Ettumanoor and Chengannur.

A Tale of Two Scandals

For the faithful, the Tantri is the ultimate authority on ritualistic purity. While the Melshanti (Head Priest) performs daily prayers, the Tantri’s presence is mandatory for the temple’s opening and all major festivals. However, this revered position has been buffeted by high-profile controversies in recent decades:

  • 2006: The Mohanaru Affair – Kandararu Mohanaru was dismissed by the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) following a scandal in Kochi involving an alleged sex racket and an armed robbery. Though cleared by the courts in 2012, the reputational damage was permanent; he was never reinstated to his position at Sabarimala.

  • 2026: The Gold Loss Case – The current arrest of Kandararu Rajeevaru comes at a particularly sensitive time, as the temple prepares for the Makarajyoti festival. The allegations concerning missing gold have reignited debates about the oversight of temple assets and the conduct of those entrusted with their care.

Tradition vs. Modernity

The current crisis highlights a tension between the family's deep-rooted spiritual tradition and the "human frailties" that have led to legal scrutiny. It was a Thazhamon Tantri who installed the current idol of Lord Ayyappa in 1951, cementing the family's place in the temple's modern history.

"The Thazhamon Madom is the bedrock of Sabarimala's rituals. To see that foundation shaken by legal battles is deeply unsettling for the millions of devotees who look to them for spiritual guidance." — Local Devotee observer.

As the investigation continues, the Travancore Devaswom Board faces the difficult task of maintaining the temple's sanctity while navigating the fallout of the arrest.
