Kozhikode: A remand prisoner, who had been undergoing treatment at the Government Mental Health Centre in Kuthiravattom, Kozhikode for the past 54 years, died here on Tuesday. The deceased is Chandran (84), a native of Vadakarapathy, Palakkad.
Chandran, who was remanded by the Chittur JCM Court in the murder case of his father-in-law in 1968, was admitted to the mental health centre a year later after he showed symptoms of mental illness.
As the trial proceedings were delayed due to the treatment, the case was transferred to long pending registrar. As time went by, Chandran became the oldest patient at the mental health centre.
Since Chandran died as a remand prisoner the Medical College police approached the Chittur Court for a magisterial probe. Following which, the magistrate arrived at the medical health centre on Thursday and finished the inquest procedures.
However, none of Chandran’s relatives were ready to accept the body and hence police recorded the statement of his grandson.
“Action will be taken to cremate the body after holding talks with the corporation authorities on Friday,” said medical college SI Sreejayan.
