
Palakkad: A remand prisoner passed away after reportedly drinking sanitiser solution that was being manufactured at Malambuzha district prison. The incident happened on Thursday after remand prisoner Ramankutty (36) was taken to a hospital for vomiting. Following the incident, authorities have stopped manufacturing of sanitiser in the jail.
Ramankutty was an accused in two theft cases. He was remanded to Malambuzha jail on February 18. Manufacturing of masks and sanitisers started in jails across the state due to coronavirus scare. He was taken to the hospital by 10 am due to vomiting and was immediately admitted in ICU section. However, he died the next day.
It was only after he was admitted in the hospital that the authorities realized he had drank sanitiser. Malambuzha Jail Superintendant Anil Kumar said he might have drank the sanitiser which had alcohol content in it.
He also said that the prisoners were warned not to drink the sanitiser solution that consisted of Isoprene alcohol and Hydrogen Peroxide, which could burn the body. The body was handed over to his relatives after post mortem. Police have filed a case of unnatural death based on Jail Superintendant’s complaint.
