Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala will introduce digital Vehicle Registration Certificates (RC) from Satuday following the successful digitalisation of driving licences. The state has updated the software to allow applicants download their RCs, with digital copies also available via the central government’s mobile apps, DigiLocker and mParivahan.

Additionally, around 10 lakh RCs that were pending due to disruption in printing will now be issued digitally.

These certificates had been delayed due to issues at the Kakkanad printing centre, which has temporarily halted operations due to an outstanding payment of approximately Rs 10 crore.

The company responsible for printing the cards had not been paid for its services, leading to a complete suspension of printing

Meanwhile, the government has decided to transition fully to digital RCs. While this change eliminates the need for physical cards, it does not provide vehicle owners with a financial benefit, as the service charge has been increased to offset any potential loss in revenue.

This approach mirrors the earlier switch to digital driving licences, which was also made after the Finance Department insisted that the government should not lose revenue from the transition.

The new digital system also addresses long-standing issues for vehicle owners.

Previously, applicants were unable to complete the application process for an RC without a printed certificate. This caused delays and made it difficult for individuals to submit requests for other services, including ownership transfers. The change is expected to ease these problems, particularly benefiting the second-hand car market.
