Thiruvananthapuram: The introduction of online vehicle registration certificates (RC) in Kerala has led to an increase in service charges, sparking criticism. Some suspect a software error behind the rise in fees, but authorities are yet to respond.

Previously, the printing fee was Rs 245, but now a unified service charge of Rs 200 is applied for all RC services. The service charge is applied for each service provided, even though the printing fee has been waived. This new system aims to prevent losses for the government in the absence of printing fee.

On Saturday, additional charges were introduced, with a service fee of Rs 400 for hypothecation termination (loan information) and Rs 550 for changing ownership, up from Rs. 515.

Although the shift to online services has reduced the workload for the Motor Vehicles Department, there are complications with the new RC printing system. The RC is now being printed on two pages, making it difficult to turn it into the traditional card size. Although a downloadable PDF of the RC in card size was initially promised, the new system has made this more complicated.

The extra fees have raised concerns, particularly as the central government provides free printing, while the state imposes additional charges.
