Heavy rains and landslides in Kerala lead to one death and restrictions on trekking, water sports. Red alerts issued.

Thiruvananthapuram: With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing red and orange alerts in multiple districts, Kerala is rolling out a series of precautionary restrictions in response to worsening weather conditions forecast for the coming days.
Authorities in Idukki district have imposed a ban on all water sports and trekking activities in the region from May 24 to May 27, citing the risk of landslides and flash floods. Trekking routes in landslide-prone areas are now off-limits, and night travel has also been banned on Monday (May 27), when the district is expected to be under a red alert.
In Kozhikode, officials have halted all quarrying, excavation, and mining operations until further notice. Tourists have been banned from visiting riverbanks, beaches, and waterfalls, as the state prepares for potentially dangerous weather patterns.
Meanwhile, the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) has warned of high waves and rough seas along Kerala’s coastline due to the kallakadal (swell surge) phenomenon. Between Saturday 8:30 am and Sunday 8:30 pm, waves as high as 2.6 to 3.8 meters are expected, posing a threat to fishermen and coastal residents.

Kollam: Alappad to Edava
Alappuzha: Chellanam to Azhikkal Jetty
Ernakulam: Munambam to Maruvakkad

Malappuram: Kadalundinagaram to Palapetty
Kozhikode: Chombala to Ramanattukara
Kannur: Valapattanam to New Mahe
Kasaragod: Kunjathur to Kottakunnu
Officials have urged residents, tourists, and fishermen to stay away from coastal areas and to strictly follow safety guidelines. Emergency services are on high alert across the state as local authorities monitor the situation closely.
Landslide death, homes and vehicles damaged:
In Kannur, a landslide at a quarry in Peringome Chural killed a worker from Assam, Gopalvarma, and injured a lorry driver. The incident occurred around 5:30 pm during intense rainfall.
In Thiruvananthapuram, uprooted trees disrupted traffic near the Greenfield International Stadium. The state capital has been issued a red alert for three hours.
In Alappuzha, a tree collapsed on a house in Thalavadi, damaging it, but the residents escaped unharmed. A similar incident occurred in Thrissur, where a roof collapsed.
At the Kottarakkara Ganapathy temple, a festival pandal collapsed, damaging three parked cars.
Authorities remain on alert as more heavy rain is expected across the state.
