Kochi: In response to the tragic death of a Train Ticket Examiner (TTE), the Indian Railways has announced the operation of Ernakulam-Patna unreserved special train, aimed at addressing the transportation needs of migrant workers and reducing incidents onboard trains. The Ernakulam-Patna train, designated as Train (06085), will comprise a total of 22 general coaches, providing ample seating for passengers.

Scheduled to depart every Friday at 11 pm, the initiative not only facilitates the return of migrant workers in Kerala to their hometowns but also aims to mitigate the occurrence of untoward incidents during train journeys.

The decision to introduce these special trains follows a distressing incident earlier this month, wherein TTE Vinod Kannan of Manjummel, Ernakulam, lost his life after being pushed by a guest worker aboard the Ernakulam-Patna Superfast train during a ticket dispute. This incident shed light on the pressing need for adequate transportation options for guest workers returning home, as highlighted by 'Mathrubhumi.'

The Railways' notification emphasizes that the introduction of these special trains is primarily aimed at alleviating the summer rush and ensuring the smooth operation of passenger services. The service is initially planned to operate until June, with the train departing from Ernakulam on Friday and reaching Patna on Monday, before making its return journey on Monday and reaching Ernakulam on Thursday.

In addition to the Ernakulam-Patna route, a new Summer Special Train (06081) has commenced operations from Kochuveli to Howrah (Shalimar Station) in West Bengal since the 12th of the month. This train also operates on Fridays, catering to the travel needs of passengers during the summer season.
