The Priyadarshini scheme, which allows free travel for women and transgender persons on Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) ordinary buses, began operations on Monday.

The programme was formally inaugurated at the Thampanoor Bus Terminal by Chief Minister V D Satheesan. In addition, local inaugurations led by elected representatives are planned at KSRTC depots across the state.

Under the scheme, the fare exemption applies only from the official launch onwards and will not cover earlier trips. The benefit is available on all 3,125 ordinary KSRTC buses statewide, which will be marked with special “Priyadarshini” stickers for easy identification. Passengers do not need to carry any identity card to use the free travel facility.

A KSRTC bus driver has welcomed the newly launched Priyadarshini Scheme, describing it as a significant welfare initiative aimed at supporting women and transgender persons through free travel on state-run buses in Kerala.

Bus driver Sheela, speaking about the programme, said she was proud to be part of the initiative and described the occasion as a memorable moment in her career.

“I am very happy. I joined the service in 2013, and I have never been part of such a major event before. Providing free travel for women is a good initiative, and I believe it will be beneficial to them,” she said.

The Priyadarshini Scheme, which came into effect on June 15, allows women and transgender persons to travel free of cost on ordinary KSRTC buses across the state. The initiative is aimed at improving mobility, accessibility and economic participation by reducing daily travel expenses and supporting access to education, employment and other opportunities.

The scheme was formally inaugurated by the Chief Minister, who flagged off the first service under the programme. The government has described it as a key welfare measure focused on social inclusion and empowerment.

Officials said the scheme will cover all 3,125 ordinary KSRTC buses operating across Kerala, including services in rural and semi-urban routes.

The state government has also said the initiative is expected to benefit a large number of daily commuters and strengthen public transport usage across the state.
