Thiruvananthapuram: Following the ban imposed on plastic, fake products claiming to be compostable, has entered the market. Since there is no ban on compostable plastic, they are brought to the market unchecked.
The government has issued strong instructions against this as a lot of complaints have emerged in this regard.
Earlier, plastic bags were used for single use purposes. Although plastic less than 50 microns was banned, they were very much available in the market. The ban on single use plastic, that came to existence from January 1, took away all the plastic bags from the market.
Within a few days, compostable plastic bags appeared in the market. It was only later that complaints starting to come up alleging it was fake.
The environment department had ordered that only those compostable plastic bags certified by the Central Pollution Control Board would be sold.
It has also been instructed that information including the company’s name, sales agency, date of manufacturing, expiry date, batch number and license number should be given in the bag along with the pollution control board’s approval in the form of QR code.
It should also be mentioned that the product can be dissolved in dichloro methane. The bags available in the market do not carry any such information. The QR codes in these bags do not work either.
