New Delhi: It is said that the CPM Politburo members will not be granted any age-related exemptions at the upcoming Party Congress in Madurai. However, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who is over 75 years old, is likely to be made a permanent invitee to the Politburo. Senior leaders like Prakash Karat, Brinda Karat, and Manik Sarkar will be special invitees to the Party Central Committee.
CPM State Secretary M.V. Govindan made it clear that no age-related exemptions will be given to Politburo members this time. He spoke to reporters in New Delhi, providing ample indication regarding the crucial decision likely to be taken by the party. Govindan has reached the national capital to attend the Central Committee meeting, which will finalise the report to be presented at the Party Congress. This effectively confirms that Pinarayi Vijayan will not continue as a permanent member of the Politburo.
However, Pinarayi Vijayan is the only CPM Chief Minister. In this context, senior party sources told Mathrubhumi News that there have been discussions about making him a special invitee to the Politburo. With the age limit, leaders like Prakash Karat, Brinda Karat, Manik Sarkar, Suryakant Mishra, and Subhashini Ali, who will be vacating their positions in the Politburo, are expected to continue as special invitees to the Central Committee.
So far, the CPM has only included former West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu as a special invitee to the Politburo. At the 19th Party Congress held in Coimbatore in 2008, Jyoti Basu was made a permanent invitee to the Politburo. He remained in that position until his death in 2010. The question now is whether Pinarayi Vijayan will also be made a special invitee to the Politburo at the Party Congress in Madurai, similar to how Jyoti Basu was included in Coimbatore.
