The Ministry of External Affairs on Friday said 14 Indian seafarers have lost their lives and two others remain missing amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia.

New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday said that the continuing conflict in West Asia has claimed the lives of 14 Indian seafarers, while two others are still missing.
Speaking at the weekly media briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the security situation in the region remains uncertain and that the safety of Indian seafarers working there continues to be a priority for the government.
Jaiswal noted that thousands of Indians are employed on commercial vessels operating in and around the Gulf, making it essential to keep them informed about evolving security threats.
While he did not provide the total number of Indians affected by the conflict, he confirmed that 14 Indian nationals working as seafarers have died and two remain unaccounted for.
The development comes after the Directorate General of Maritime Administration (DGMA) advised shipping companies, vessel managers and recruitment agencies to avoid assigning Indian seafarers to ships travelling through the Strait of Hormuz until further notice.
According to the maritime regulator, the advisory was issued in view of the deteriorating security environment following a series of attacks on merchant vessels in the region.
Several commercial ships have reportedly come under attack in recent weeks, significantly increasing risks for crews operating in Gulf waters.
The advisory also follows heightened tensions in West Asia after recent military developments involving the United States and Iran raised concerns about a wider regional conflict and possible disruption to one of the world's busiest shipping routes.
India has once again stressed the importance of ensuring uninterrupted navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, describing the waterway as critical for global trade, energy supplies and economic stability.
The MEA said New Delhi is closely monitoring the evolving situation while continuing to push for de-escalation, dialogue and diplomatic efforts to restore peace in the region.
The ministry also reiterated its concern over attacks that have affected Indian nationals and said protecting citizens abroad remains a key priority.
