Paravur Assembly constituency in Ernakulam, Keralam, gears up for 2026 elections. VD Satheesan seeks sixth consecutive term amid triangular battle with LDF and NDA.

North Paravur (Ernakulam): The Paravur Assembly constituency in Kerala’s Ernakulam district is gearing up for a high-stakes battle in the 2026 Kerala Legislative Assembly elections, with Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan aiming for a sixth consecutive term in a multi-cornered contest.
Constituency number 78 in the 140-member Kerala Legislative Assembly, Paravur is a general seat with no reservation for Scheduled Castes (SC) or Scheduled Tribes (ST), making it a key political battleground. The constituency includes North Paravur municipality and seven panchayats: Chendamangalam, Chittattukara, Ezhikkara, Kottuvally, Puthenvelikkara, Varapuzha, and Vadakkekkara. Rapid urbanisation, driven by proximity to Kochi, has made infrastructure, civic amenities, and local development decisive issues in the elections.
The 2026 contest mirrors the broader triangular fight in Kerala politics, with the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) vying for dominance.
VD Satheesan’s challenge and political record
Satheesan, 61, a senior Indian National Congress leader, filed his nomination on March 23. He faces a tough contest from ET Taison master of the Communist Party of India (CPI), along with several independents and smaller party candidates. Satheesan has declared 18 criminal cases in his Election Commission affidavit, with total assets exceeding Rs 6.65 crore and liabilities of approximately Rs 41.45 lakh.
Known for his accessibility, active constituency engagement, and rapid response to local issues, Satheesan has gradually shifted local voter priorities from party loyalty to performance and accountability. His support base spans fishing communities, workers, traders, and middle-class residents.
Taison Master, also 61, declared one criminal case, with assets over Rs 1.10 crore and no liabilities. Other notable candidates include independents G Gokuldev (35, assets Rs 83 lakh) and K B Satheesan (63, assets Rs 3.6 lakh), as well as P K Rajesh of the Bahujan Samaj Party (48, assets Rs 95.16 lakh) and V M Faisal of the Social Democratic Party of India (48, assets Rs 22 lakh).
Historical voting trends
In the 2021 Kerala Assembly elections, Satheesan retained Paravur by defeating CPI candidate MT Nixon by 21,301 votes. Satheesan secured 82,264 votes (51.87%), while Nixon polled 60,963 votes (38.44%). The BDJS candidate, A B Jayaprakash, finished third with 12,964 votes. Voter turnout in 2021 was robust at 84.01%, with 1,57,481 valid votes cast out of a total electorate of 1,88,783.
Satheesan’s repeated victories have marked a significant political shift in Paravur, traditionally a CPI stronghold, and underline the growing importance of personal credibility over party allegiance in Kerala politics.

Election schedule and key contenders
The Election Commission of India has announced that polling for the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections will be held in a single phase on April 9, with counting scheduled for May 4. The current Assembly’s term ends on May 23, and the Model Code of Conduct is already in effect.
The LDF, led by CPM, has governed Kerala for the past decade, retaining power in 2021 with 99 seats. The UDF won 41 seats, while the NDA, despite an 11.4% vote share, failed to secure any seats. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan became the first Kerala CM to win re-election after a full five-year term.
Why Paravur matters
With Satheesan playing a pivotal role in the UDF’s statewide campaign, the result in Paravur is closely watched as both an indicator of the front’s electoral prospects and Satheesan’s influence in Kerala politics. Key issues shaping voter sentiment include infrastructure, urban development, employment opportunities, civic amenities, and local governance.
Major alliances contesting the seat include:
- LDF: CPM, Kerala Congress (M), Rashtriya Janata Dal, Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar).
- UDF: Congress, Kerala Congress, Indian Union Muslim League.
- NDA: BJP, Twenty20, Bharath Dharma Jana Sena, Kerala Kamaraj Congress.
As Keralam gears up for the 2026 Assembly elections, Paravur’s outcome will serve as a bellwether for political trends across Ernakulam district and the state at large.
